Emerging Artist: Hammer Lane Hippies
Oklahoma contemporary blues act delivers sophisticated sounds
Ada, Oklahoma’s Hammer Lane Hippies [Spotify | Apple Music] are a three-piece group and riding high on newfound fans and big opportunities, like a recent slot opening for Uncle Lucius in Shawnee.
When we first saw Hammer Lane Hippies, we were expecting something like your typical three-piece Texas power trio — perhaps playing classic rock and ZZ Top covers — but when we heard their 2023 single Miss Baby, it was clear Hammer Lane Hippies are something more. Take a listen to the track, produced by Justin Coffee:
Hammer Lane Hippies demonstrate a sophistication in their songwriting, with hints and flavors of tasty blues, hearty country, rock and even subtle jazz. We’re told the video for Miss Baby was shot independently on an iPhone, further demonstrating the depth of the Hippies’ creativity.
Comprised of lead vocalist and guitarist Lee Tyler, bassist Michael Wells and drummer Gavin Brecheen, Hammer Lane Hippies are currently working toward an album. Taking Tyler’s Jonny Lang-esque voice and blues guitar skills into account, this band shows abundant promise. I checked in with the guys, who recently released their second single, Ms. Too Turnt Up, and Lee Tyler told me they’re working on a video for the boogie-woogie blues rock number. Caleb Shirtum from Shady Neighbor Records produced the track, and we can expect to see the new video soon, with the album still to come, so make sure you follow Hammer Lane Hippies on your favorite streaming platform.
