Singer/songwriter Kevin Galloway’s story started in Freeport, Texas, where he held down a job in the banking industry. Like any music man who feels it in his soul, however, Galloway felt pulled to perform. He moved to Austin, where Uncle Lucius would be born, but after four successful albums, just as the band broke through, it was over. Their 2012 album “And You Are Me” spawned the single “Keep the Wolves Away” which, at the time of this writing, had 148-million spins on Spotify and 152-million views on YouTube thanks to an appearance on the Kevin Costner streaming series Yellowstone. It was enough to convince members of the band that Uncle Lucius still had something to offer.
Luckily, Uncle Lucius was only broken up for about five years, as Galloway pointed out to a cheering crowd who braved the rain to catch the band at the Wichita Falls St. Patrick’s Downtown Street Festival in March 2024. The band worked their way back and has been on the road lately in support of their comeback album “Like It’s the Last One,” a fantastic crafted collection of country, Americana and Southern Rock songs.
Uncle Lucius’ sound is a refined exploration of the music of the south and a celebration of southern culture. Their current single highlights (or perhaps, laments) that “All the Angelenos” [Spotify | Apple Music] are moving down to Texas.
At an Uncle Lucius show, the rock energy comes out a little bit more than what you hear on their recorded material, and you’ll be smacked with hints of Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Eagles, and Santana, as well as the spirit of Waylon and Merle and others.
Uncle Lucius played the Iron Horse Pub in downtown Wichita Falls on their way up — gigs that singer Kevin Galloway said he barely remembers — but the crowd obviously remembered them and showed it by coming out on a rain-soaked St Patrick’s day weekend where the temperatures hovered in the low 50s.
I count myself as an Uncle Lucius fan and sincerely hope this is the beginning of something new for this incredible band. When Uncle Lucius comes back to Wichita Falls, make it a point to catch this incredible show.
Did you see Uncle Lucius perform at the Iron Horse Pub back in the day? Tell us about it in the comments.
