Michael Kately and Ethan Snow, known as A.T.A. Unplugged, played an acoustic gig at 6th Street Winery recently and it made for a great night of entertainment for those in attendance. Kately, accompanied by Snow on the box drum and backing vocals, offered his unique selection of cover tunes and originals while the rest of us enjoyed a glass of wine by the cozy fireplace.
Michael Kately is also the singer for Downtown Royalty Band, and with A.T.A. Unplugged, Michael did an acoustic version of their emotional single, “Blue.” The guys also did Michael’s signature cover of Christina Aguilera’s “Genie in a Bottle,” Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline,” some Ray Charles, and a number of other singalong tracks.
I had personally not seen a box drummer up close before and I was very impressed with the rhythmic accompaniment Ethan provided. I made a point to ask him after the show whether he plays the drums on a full kit with another band. Imagine my surprise when he said “I’ve never tried it.” Ethan told me he’s not actually a drummer — he considers himself a saxophonist — but you would never know it.

I personally came to the conclusion that I’ve waited too long to cover some acoustic shows for TheFUSE, and you can expect to see more of it in the future, because who says acoustic shows can’t be a lot of fun?
