Witches and Clockwork: The Debut of Mind Funeral
Garry Walden's homage to Sabbath takes the stage at the pub
Not long ago, we included Mind Funeral’s debut single — Cyberwitch — on our most recent Red River Playlist, and noted the similarity to Monster Magnet, COC, and Mastodon. Soon after, we had the chance to see Mind Funeral step out on the Iron Horse Pub’s stage and all similarity to the aforementioned groups fell away in the path of an interpolated Black Sabbath-esque steamroller.
Mind Funeral is the latest musical project from Garry Walden (Ladybird/Basics) and includes Ladybird bassist Peter Skulski, plus Tyler Farmer on lead guitar, and Ryan Meek on drums. Their show at the Iron Horse Pub brought to fruition what Garry Walden told us is a long-running dream of the guys in the band — to actually have a gigging band paying heavy homage to the sound of Black Sabbath.
As of this writing, Cyberwitch is Mind Funeral’s lone streaming single, but Clockwork, the final song in their set on the night we saw them play, is going to blow everyone’s mind when we get a polished studio version. It’s incredible.
We might go as far to say Mind Funeral’s homage to Black Sabbath is spot-on to the point it might be polarizing in its affection for its source inspiration, like Greta Van Fleet initially was to Led Zeppelin fans. And that’s a compliment.
We’re told there is more streaming music to come from Mind Funeral and we cannot wait. We’d recommend you follow therm on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, or wherever you stream music so you don’t miss their upcoming releases.
Local songwriter Jay Burnam told us on this night that he’s never seen a brand new band dominate from the very first downbeat the way Mind Funeral did on this night, and we’d be inclined to agree. It was a very strong debut.
