Whiskey Runners Live
Lawton, Oklahoma band makes a special appearance at Open Mic Night
On more than occasion, TheFUSE has said Open Mic Nights are a great night of entertainment, because you never know what you’re going to see and hear — uncommon song selections and unexpected appearances. A recent Open Mic Night at The Iron Horse Pub, hosted by Clint Vines, was a great example.
Whereas Open Mic Nights are usually acoustic solo performers, this particular occasion brought us an unexpected treat, a mini-set by a full band — Lawton, Oklahoma’s Whiskey Runners.
Whiskey Runners consists of Bret James on guitar and vocals, Anthony Spencer on vocals and lead guitar, Brandon Wallace on bass, and drummer Adam Aguilar. We checked-in with Bret via DM and he told us Whiskey Runners has been a band for only two months, but each member of the band has been playing in their own musical projects for some time. Their individual skills are apparent in their performances, with James and Spencer each showing their own country flavor on lead vocals.
We heard several original songs that were very promising, including a Bret James-led track entitled “Outlaw ‘til I Die” that stood out as particularly great. Several original selections sung by Anthony Spencer were great, too, with his baritone singing voice and storytelling style bringing to mind Johnny Cash comparisons, among others.
Our only complaint about this short set by the Whiskey Runners was that it got over too soon. We’d like to see Whiskey Runners again in the near future, and it occurred to us that they’d be great on a double bill with Oklahoma’s Zack Crow.
