Spotlight Single: Zack Crow "Was It Love"
Oklahoma's rising star returns with stellar country/rock hybrid single
We’ve been getting a generous dose of new music from rising Oklahoma star Zack Crow lately, and now he’s back with another new single — Was It Love [Listen on Spotify | Apple Music].
I’ve always believed the music characterized as “country” in our current era would have been considered “southern rock” in days gone by, partly because rock has gone so much further to the heavy end of the spectrum, and also because country has changed a lot over the years. Fiddles, steel guitars and ten-gallon hats are not as common as they once were.
Zack Crow’s music exemplifies our modern country music — it’s a hybrid of country and rock, with the flavor of southern rock from days gone by. I’ve compared Zack’s music to Bad Company, and with Was It Love, the comparison still holds. In addition, there are organ fills and guitar leads that evoke similar associations with Skynyrd and The Allman Brothers, and thought-provoking lyrics delivered as powerhouse vocals that leave the subject matter just out-of-focus, in a state of hazy truth.
I’m no stranger to this type of thing
My life’s been full of pain and misery
I remember the first time it happened to me
I swore I’d never do it again
Was it love that made you lonely
Was it love that broke your heart
Does the night come when you only
Need the sun to shine
According to a post on Crow’s Facebook page, Was It Love is “a blues rock tune that we cut with the one and only Mauldin Productions back in June (2023). Cody Choate on drums, Mackey Divine on bass, and Matthew MacKelvie on keys.”
