Ratchet Dolls Live in Wichita Falls
Bringing thunder and lightning into the Iron Horse
San Antonio’s Ratchet Dolls made their first appearance in Wichita Falls as the opening act for Hellen Bach, on a night when severe thunderstorms were guaranteed, and tornadoes a strong possibility. Judging by the number of reserved tables in the club that weren’t claimed, the risk of severe weather did keep a number of ticketholders from coming out, but it didn’t stop Ratchet Dolls from bringing the thunder into the pub.
Kevin Sauceda fronts Ratchet Dolls, serving as lead guitarist and vocalist for the Sunset Strip-inspired outfit. He is joined by bonafide guitar hero Sofie Abrams on co-lead guitar and vocals, Homer Olvera on bass and vocals, and drummer Ethan Lo.
While a booming thunderstorm went on outside and rattled the roof at the club, Ratchet Dolls put on a show, unleashing their own thunder and lightning. How often does a band come out and uncork a drum solo in the first song? Windmill guitar strumming in song two? You know what you’re getting right upfront at a Ratchet Dolls show. Entertainment.
Lead and rhythm guitarist Sofie Abrams told me she met Kevin on the road. In Idaho, she had her own band, and met Kevin and Ratchet Dolls when they were out on tour together, their bands playing some of the same bills. They maintained a long distance relationship between Idaho and Texas for a time, but eventually she moved to San Antonio and the two joined forces in Ratchet Dolls. She is an amazing musician with killer rock chops.
Sofie also stars in their new video, Loud Loud Loud, marking her first appearance on camera.
Frontman Kevin Sauceda led the crowd through singalong choruses of familiar rock cover songs, like Def Leppard’s Rock of Ages, Rebel Yell by Billy Idol, and KISS’ Detroit Rock City, but it’s Ratchet Dolls original music that really stole the show.
During their set, Ratchet Dolls played a bunch of their original music, along with a never-released original track called The Enemy. It was all good.
Then, Sauceda asked if there was anything anyone in the crowd would like to hear. When someone yelled “Out of Control,” the name of a single the Dolls put out four years ago, Abrams reacted with a look of surprise, and Sauceda delighted that there was someone in the crowd who knew their original music. They tore into the song, which is an absolute banger, and you should take a look at the video:
Ratchet Dolls’ show at the Iron Horse Pub was as the opening act for Hellen Bach, to commemorate Larissa Brown’s Year of the Dragon Birthday Bash, and having an opening act like the Dolls made for one continuous night of great music.
