New Music Alert: Cody Joe Pope
Gainesville, Texas artist returns with "The Burning Light"
I first wrote about Gainesville, Texas singer, songwriter and axe-slinger Cody Joe Pope in September 2023, when he released his debut single, Flyin’ High. At the time, Cody said he was working on an EP of new music, and now, he’s back with a new single — The Burning Light.

The Burning Light gives us a deeper look into Pope’s songwriting — elegant guitar, synthesized strings, and ambiguous, thought-provoking lyrics.
I kind of expected this nearly 7-minute long opus to break into full-on Freebird-esque southern rock after about 4 and a half minutes, but Pope chose to keep it subdued, and produced a placid, sit-by-the-window-with-your-coffee song that delivers. Lyrically, Pope said “It's a short story about a person on a street corner trying to warn people of nuclear destruction.”
Pope told me he performed all the instruments himself with the exception of one guitar part, which was performed by Corey Tattro, who also helped engineer the record at Boltneck Studios in Fort Worth and plays bass in the DFW band Jibe.
As of this writing, we can expect an EP from Pope sometime this summer.
