Hazel: In the Spotlight
A soulful Wichita Falls singer with songwriting chops
Upon first listening to Hazel, one can be easily transfixed. The Wichita Falls singer’s songwriting skill is apparent right from the jump on “Divine” and her vocal chops are a smooth and silky mixture of influences that must include timeless artists like Sade, Natalie Merchant and Nora Jones. I thought I heard some hints of current artists, like Dua Lipa, too.
I listened to Hazel’s recorded back-catalog and found it to be a mixture of soulful numbers accompanied mainly by the piano — an excercise that allows the siren’s buttery melodies to shine — plus, uptempo pop numbers and easy to enjoy adult contemporary songs.
On the other hand, if you catch Hazel on a quiet night at a local watering hole, as I did tonight, you’re just as likely to hear her original guitar arrangement of Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game” and a number of other covers. Hazel is quite talented and very enjoyable. Catch her at an upcoming show and you’ll see for yourself.
