I was surfing for new music by Texoma artists recently and I ran across Cody Joe Pope, a Gainseville, Texas singer and guitarist just venturing into his own as a solo artist.
“I spent sixteen years predominantly as a lead guitarist for different local bands and artists. Anywhere from blues to metal to Texas country,” Pope told me. “It just took a while to finally get my ‘act’ together, and finally getting my own thing going. I think that's a mixture of both maturing and finally believing in myself.”
Pope’s debut solo single is Flyin’ High, which contains all the elements of Pope’s emerging musical identity — a little boogie woogie, some southern rock and country, all blended together into a promising debut.
The inspiration for the song, and the opening lyric, comes from a girl.
“I dated a French girl for a short stint years ago,” Pope said. “It didn't last long, but it was fun for a short period of time. And it did inspire a simple rock n roll song with a bit of a Southern swagger.”
Pope’s currently working on an EP and is filling time with sporadic shows here and there, with eventual plans for a possible tour.
If Cody Joe Pope brings his restless brand of country rock to the Wichita Falls area for a show, I’ll definitely be checking it out.
