Chucky Waggs and the Company of Raggs at Parkstomp
The headliners brought the bluegrass on night one
Night one of the Parkstomp bluegrass festival in Medicine Park, Oklahoma included music from the Danny Spain Gang to open the show, and the headliners, Chucky Waggs and the Company of Raggs, brought the curtain down with a great set of their own after sunset.
Chucky Waggs is the stagename for Charles Wagner, a musician out of Eureka Springs, Arkansas, and for bluegrass fans, he brings a traditional take, in the style of a busking, one-man band. Waggs plays drums, guitar, and sings lead all at once.
If variety is your jam, Chucky Waggs and the Company of Raggs can be country, folk, even jugband at times — there’s a little something for everyone — and if you’re just discovering the group, you’re in luck, because they have a backlog of four full albums for you to enjoy. [Spotify | Apple Music]
Most of the results from a simple internet search about Chucky Waggs and the Company of Raggs came back as song links, past and future show dates, and their Facebook page has the messages option turned off. There are very few prominent interviews with music publications that I could find. I couldn’t even find the names of the other musicians in the group listed anywhere online, so I sent a message to Chucky Waggs’ Instagram account, and if I hear back, I will update this story with the names of his talented band, but based on available information, Chucky Waggs and the Company of Raggs prefer to let their music do the talking.
The Company of Raggs has been described as a rotating cast of musicians which accompanies CW onstage, and on this night at Parkstomp, the company included members of Danny Spain Gang — Joe Credit on mandolin and Dave Gesualdo on upright bass.
