TheFUSE was fortunate to catch Wichita Falls punk/emo trio Basics’ first Iron Horse Pub performance in June of 2023, at a time when they had been a band for less than a year. Since then, we’ve seen them perform a Halloween gig in Iowa Park, reviewed their new EP “Welp,” and I was thrilled to do their promo photos, too. It has been a thrill to watch this young band evolve.
While Basics’ style remains true — a blend of indie punk and emo — singer and guitarist Austin Rupe’s songwriting shows maturation. Distorted chords are increasingly augmented with cool melodic leads between verses, and the lyrics are deep and introspective.
Bassist Trevor Teague and drummer Maycen Miser have found their groove in the year they’ve been a band and make a solid foundation. If you’re at the back of the room, do not be surprised to see Trevor roaming the stage as he lays down a bass line, or Maycen’s sticks rising high above the crowd when he starts going off (and he does). Basics’ rhythm section puts on a show, even for the people in the back row.
Those who’ve been following Basics on social media know, they’ve been making improvements to the machine, too. They’re playing on the road (including an upcoming gig in Tulsa as of this writing), buying new gear and trying out unexplored sounds. It is a pleasure to hear and see their growth.
