Wichita Falls’ own country aces Armadillo Flatts kicked off the park district’s 2024 “Concerts in the Park” series this past Tuesday, and from the beginning, it was a race to see what happened first — a night of music and dancing on the lawn, or a thunderstorm. Thankfully, country music won the race.
Stevie Looney is the lead singer of Armadillo Flatts, a band he founded with former bassist Tim Maloney about 7 years ago.
Today, Armadillo Flatts lineup includes the very talented Tracy Frerich on bass and vocals, keyboardist and vocalist Mike Mayfield, Ron Sodos on steel guitar, drummer James King, and Clay Sanderson on lead guitar. On this night, however, Kenny Gregory (also known for Kenny G’s DJ service) filled in for Sanderson on lead guitar.

We saw Looney, Frerich and Mayfield each sing lead on a selection or two and they all sounded great. Armadillo Flatts is a band brimming with great singers.
To our ears, Armadillo Flatts is the kind of group you hire for a convention, or Christmas Party, or… a concert in the park. This group is talented, mainstream and safe for people of all ages. It was a night of music under the stars that included contemporary country as well as classic covers from Ronnie Milsap and Elvis.

There was dancing on the lawn, food trucks in attendance, and the music mostly beat the thunderstorms, with rain starting to roll in just as the show would have otherwise concluded.
We’ll see you for All Funk Radio Show on May 14th.
