It’s a Friday night and you walk into Wichita Falls’ marquee hotspot for live music to hear a high-energy multi-genre band performing all the danceable shizz you love. It’s everything from covers of “Cake by the Ocean” by pop act DNCE, the classic rock “Lido Shuffle” by Boz Scaggs, Jason Aldean’s “Dust on the Bottle,” to standout original music from their debut album “In Our Own Little World.”

It’s the kind of music that has the ladies dancing in the aisles, hands waving in the air, and if you’re new to the act, you’re like, “who is this?”

The answer is Local Zero, a Wichita Falls variety band that you can catch playing the Iron Horse Pub a couple times every year, led by soulful dual lead vocalists Jason Reeder and Jennica Lambert.

We saw them last Friday at the Pub and Local Zero did not disappoint. Judging from the stage banter, Lambert in particular was feeling spicy, and the band’s outstanding ensemble that consists of guitarist Barry Faulkner, bassist Danny Craig, and drummer Erik Coronado, happily indulged her energy.

Those who’ve seen Local Zero before come out in numbers every time they play, and this occasion was a heavy turnout, too.

You might smell smoke, but rest assured the club is not on fire. It’s just Local Zero.

Imagine the world before cell phones—before the internet. News traveled by print and word of mouth, and great new bands were discovered when your best friend played you a song or when you wandered into a live music venue expecting nothing and walked out having found the next big thing. With the recorded debut of Wichita Falls quintet Local Zero, today’s streaming listeners are about to experience the modern equivalent of stumbling into a club in 1978 and witnessing something special.

A fixture on the Wichita Falls music scene, Local Zero has been packing houses for years—and will no doubt do so again at Iron Horse Pub on New Year’s Eve. Yet until now, they’ve been curiously absent from the streaming world. Consider that problem officially solved with the release of their debut EP, In Our Own Little World, Part 1.

The four-track release drops on New Year’s Eve (with a promised Part 2 still to come) and immediately impresses with its polished musicianship, thoughtful composition, and confident lyricism from the very first notes.

Self-produced and mixed with refined precision, In Our Own Little World channels classic pop-rock energy. Barry Faulkner’s blues-tinged guitar leads the charge, supported by the seasoned, hired-gun-level chops of bassist Danny Craig and drummer Erik Coronado, while dual lead vocalists Jason Reeder and Jennica Lambert trade lines and emotions with ease.

One track in particular stands out. “Lovin’ by the Rules” [lyric video] is nothing short of stunning—a call-and-response love song about missed chances that evokes the soulful storytelling of a bygone era, when songs lingered long after the last note faded.

“It’s just being told from two points of view,” Faulkner explained. “The girl is unaware that the guy even saw her in the bar. They’re both wondering if they should have gotten it right, and each thinks the other has moved on.”

After several verses and a scorching Faulkner solo, “Lovin’ by the Rules” breaks down into a subdued scene in a bar. We hear the tinkling of glasses and muted conversations.

Reeder’s masculine tenor enters first:

I saw you at our place the other night / Had second thoughts that our timing wasn’t right / But you were with another guy so I just walked away.

Lambert answers with a sweet ache of her own:

I’m here staring into this guy’s eyes / Knowing he’ll never fit me right / Wondering what would have happened if we had just…

Together, they finish the thought—“gotten it right”—and then BOOM: the band crashes back in for a full-force crescendo.

This is musical craftsmanship at the highest level—the kind that raises goosebumps on your arms and the hair on the back of your neck. “Lovin’ by the Rules” deserves radio airplay and a permanent spot on any music lover’s playlist.

In Our Own Little World, Part 1 will be streaming on New Year’s Eve. The band will also have merch and CD copies available at their Iron Horse show that night, with vinyl editions planned for the future.

What a way to close out 2025.

We first saw Bowie, Texas’ The Innocence perform a new artist showcase at The Iron Horse Pub in 2024. At that time, Caleb Tomlinson was the sole lead vocalist, and The Innocence’ sky-high potential was already on display. Since that time, co-lead vocalist Faith Williams has joined the band, and the potential has been realized. Faith’s husband Fig Williams plays rhythm, with incendiary lead guitar supplied by Austin Brock. The lineup is rounded out by bassist Garrett Hachtel and drummer Landon Guana. Together, the members of The Innocence create something that transcends their roots in tiny Bowie, Texas.

“Like” — or better yet, LOVE — everything they post. Leave a comment, share their content, and tell your friends about them. Don’t wait six months between shout-outs. Support them regularly, as often as you can. Every reaction, share, and comment helps their work reach more people.

Buy tickets to their shows. Eight or twelve dollars won’t break anyone’s budget, and it’s a small price for an amazing, one-of-a-kind experience — a memory no one can take away. When you’re there, be present: stand up, move, cheer loudly, and let the artist know you’re having a great time. Your energy feeds theirs.

BUY

Most artists have a merch table — take a look. Buy a shirt, a sticker, a CD, or whatever they’re offering. More and more, artists rely on ticket and merchandise sales to sustain their craft. Every purchase, no matter how small, makes a difference.

SHARE AND PROMOTE

If you’ve done all of the above, this might be the most important step.
Bought a shirt? Post a photo wearing it.
Took great shots at the show? Share them and tag the artist.
Excited for their next gig? Tell people — online, at work, at church, in line at the grocery store. Invite friends through event pages. Be a volunteer promoter for your favorite performer — they’ll remember and appreciate you for it.

ARTISTS RESPOND

And for the artists — this is a two-way street. Stay active online and in your community. When fans comment on your posts or share your music, take a moment to respond. As the saying goes, “Live your life in the comments.” Personal interaction builds real connection — and that connection keeps fans coming back show after show.

Wichita Falls country rock quintet Baylor Rose played their debut as a headline act at the Iron Horse Pub last weekend, and considering the assembled talent and energetic performance, this group left no doubt they belong at the top of any bill.

Baylor Rose consists of Bryson Lawrence, Angel Perez, and Mike Hardison, all three of whom are members of Blank Labels (a band that went on hiatus after their bassist, Mackie Divine, departed for life in Europe) plus noted singer/songwriters Zack Crow and Jay Burnam. Baylor Rose is undoubtedly a Texoma supergroup of unmatched strength.

This performance included original music from each act’s catalog, including bangers from Zack Crow and “Every Time They Talk” from Jay Burnam, plus covers that spanned genres, from country hits by artists like Travis Tritt, to timeless country rock classics from groups like The Eagles and John Mellencamp.

There were fantastic guest appearances by singer Jeanette Perry, Wichita Falls country standout Clint Vines, and a powerful ensemble performance of The Beatles’ “Don’t Let Me Down” led by James Cook, too.

We’re putting Baylor Rose on our list of groups to see often, and we’d recommend you do the same.

It could be argued that the true measure of respect for a performer is how many other performers come out to see them play. If true, Vernon’s Last Drag announced their arrival on the Wichita Falls scene with an explosive debut at the Iron Horse Pub. Members of The Kept, Strange Lucy, Escape Goats, Hellen Bach, and many more showed up to watch Last Drag blow the doors open as the opening act for Baylor Rose, and everybody seemed to go away convinced—Last Drag slaps.

We saw Last Drag for the first time in the summer of 2025, at an outdoor gig at Vernon Parts, and we were immediately impressed with this trio of young performers playing alternative and punk numbers from the turn-of-the-millennium… Green Day, Yellowcard, Blink 182, STP and more.

Last Drag’s show brings tremendous energy, propulsive, guitar-driven hooks, and a double vocalist performance from guitarist Alvin Guerrero and bassist Kavian Montoya. All the while, skinsman Parker Flynn keeps time with powerful drumming that might just knock some cymbals loose. We saw that happen, but Last Drag didn’t miss a beat.

If you have good memories associated with the music that was popular a few years on either side of 2000, Last Drag is a band you don’t want to miss in a live setting.

With a bang, the City of Wichita Falls concluded its 2025 Concert in the Park series with an appearance by the band that must be the best Stevie Ray Vaughan tribute in the country, Texas Flood.

Led by Tommy Katona, a Hungarian transplant who moved to Texas in 2007, Texas Flood absolutely nails Stevie Ray Vaughan, and we heard the same comment from several people in the audience on this night. “I can’t believe how much he sounds like Stevie.”

As amazing as Tommy’s vocal likeness is, his six-string chops are even more incredible. All night, he treated the audience to bluesy, soulful guitar theatrics on a Stratocaster that looked just like Stevie Ray Vaughan’s original. We’d seen Texas Flood before, but this was the first time we’d really been able to sit down and enjoy the show, and we were completely blown away.

Katona’s SRV pantomime would be nothing without a great band, and Texas Flood has it, with bassist Steve Buckner and drummer Travis Montoya. Together, these three musicians made sure this show would hold Wichita Falls over ‘til concerts in the park start up again in April. In the meantime, go see Texas Flood any chance you get.

New Wichita Falls vocal trio B-Side staged their public debut with a performance at Hook and Ladder Coffees and Wine last weekend, and it went off like there are some amazing performances to come.

B-Side is comprised of Lelani Lei and Melissa Williams (both of Escape Goats and Jagged Little Band,) and Brandt Holmes (New Realm, The Fleeting Romance). Together they form a great vocal combo with sweet and beautifully-intertwined three-part harmonies.

A full-house gathered at Hook and Ladder for B-Side, who performed a great selection of radio hits from groups like Matchbox Twenty, Fleetwood Mac, and Tonic, which makes it perhaps more surprising that some of the best songs we noticed were B-Sidified versions of Brandt Holmes’ original music.

Seated in a comfortable chair with a flatbread and some excellent wine, it occurred to us that B-Side perfectly straddles the fence between dinner music to accompany nice conversation with friends, and an engaging performance from which you can’t tear your attention away. Hopefully, this is the beginning of a long career for this trio.

TheFUSE has been fanboying Wichita Falls punk/emo trio Basics for a couple years now, but it had been way too long since we’d seen them. So, we decided to follow them from one unique spot to the next on successive nights, and in the process we got bonus music from Joy Drive and Garry Walden.

For the last After Hours Art Walk of 2025, we walked down to Deviance Skate Supply, where Basics was playing a set on the sidewalk. This marked our first chance to see the band with their current drummer Jono Hardman, and we thought Jono brought something extra to the band—a hard-hitting locked-in groove, felt primarily when guitarist/frontman Austin Rupe and bassist Trevor Teague break down into heavy riffing guitar breaks.

How good are Basics? As we were leaving, we ran into a friend who was just arriving. He said he could hear them from down the block, and he had to come see who it was because “they sounded too good to be just anybody.” When he discovered it was Basics, he said “that explains it.”

The following night, Basics were on the bill again, this time headlining at Wichita Falls most chill underground venue, a private backyard amphitheater called Birdman’s Nest. As a bonus, Joy Drive and Garry Walden were also performing.

The Birdman’s Nest Facebook page says “Our events are private and free. To be able to attend our events you gotta know someone that knows someone or something... WE ARE NOT A CULT!”

After an excellent acoustic set by Garry Walden [Ladybird, Mind Funeral], we got our first look and listen to Joy Drive, a Wichita Falls-based band that describes themselves as post-grunge. Joy Drive is comprised of Nathan Whisnand on bass and vocals, Nathan Banks, guitar and vocals, and drummer Logan Davidson, and we thought they were very promising, incorporating elements of hardcore and noise to create their own reckless sound.

Amongst the crowd of 40 or 50, there we several birthdays happening, including for show organizer Jay, so we all gathered around a table of pizza and cake for a rendition of Happy Birthday.

Basics headlined the night and not only played some of their better known singles from their catalog, they played a couple of brand new bangers that haven’t been recorded yet.

We’ve been friends with Wichita Falls photographer Jess Clark for some time, and many who’ve had their newborns locally photographed in the last few years are familiar with Jess, too, through her company, Midray Photography.

Perhaps not as many people are aware that Jess’ enthusiasm for photography extends to ominous, cinematic, and dramatic subjects, and with the spooky season upon us, we thought it would be a good time to share some of Jess’ eerie work.

Another successful Burn Shop Block Party and Triple Steak Cookoff to benefit the Wichita Falls Fire and Police Associations is in the books, and once again, a rousing success. The 2025 celebration was a two day affair which started on Friday night with a kickoff concert by Wichita Falls’ outstanding funk rock band Downtown Royalty.

For day two partygoers, the main attraction is an incredible steak dinner with sides and all the fixins, with the steaks supplied by McBride’s steakhouse.

Cooks from all over the country also gathered for the three steak cookoffs and competed for a chance to go to the national competition. There were trophies, and photos, and cooking tricks in abundance.

Punch and Whiskey returned for the second straight year and opened the Saturday show with an excellent country set.

After the sun went down, Texoma’s all-90s cover band Escape Goats took the stage and led the healthy crowd through a set of singalong songs led by dual lead vocalists Lelani and Melissa.

Concluding the night, a headline country rock performance by Denton’s Kody West.

We just got a chance to catch a full-band show by The Hattons last Friday night at The Iron Horse Pub, and it was a fantastic set of country and rock songs, both original and covers. Now it’s time to hit the road.

This weekend, The Hattons are taking special guest Baylor Rose to represent Wichita Falls country at Filthy McNasty’s in the Fort Worth Stockyards.

Seymour’s Brass Skulls made a return appearance in Wichita Falls with a gig at the Iron Horse Pub, and just as they did in previous live spots, they brought energy and musical skill that rivals some of the best traveling bands from across Texoma. The Skulls are the reigning winners of Wichita Falls’ 2025 Freedom Fest Battle of the Bands, and catching one of their gigs clearly shows why. This band has talent, top to bottom.

Brass Skulls has gone through some lineup changes since we first saw them, and now boasts a triple guitar attack. However, guitarist Clint Chandler was unable to be with them on this night, leaving the eminently capable guitar duo of Roger Smithson and Terry Easter to handle six-string duties. Husband and wife team Dave and Sam Navarro (drums and bass, respectively,) with lead vocalist Landon Green, headlined the night with a blistering set of hard rock covers and originals, and left every live rock fan fulfilled.

It always helps when the headliner has a powerhouse opening act.

Special guests Blood & Rust opened the night, led by Angel Hunter, a veteran of the Wichita Falls metal scene (Skinhook) who recently returned to the stage after years away, and she had her own cheering section of enthusiastic fans.

Blood & Rust also features a husband and wife duo, with Angel’s husband and multi-instrumentalist Jaymes Jager (Dirt, Escape Goats) on drums, plus lead guitarist Hank Relic, Jacob Howard on rhythm, and Matt Wolf on bass. Together, they bludgeoned the walls of the Iron Horse with metal originals and cover tunes.

At last check, Angel’s other band Skinhook, was scheduled to unleash the beast at Wichita Falls Brewing Company on November 1st. Don’t miss that.

A new stairway leading to the second floor has appeared, although no doorway has opened at the top… yet. But we're told something is coming soon, and there will be an announcement to accompany it.

Consider it a FUSE recommendation: vinyl lovers and collectors should visit the Antique 78 RPM Record Shop, on the ground floor of Big Blue in downtown Wichita Falls.

We stopped in recently and spoke with owner Justin Goode, and we were wowed with the effort he’s put into his store, and his wealth of knowledge on all things vinyl. The store is called Antique 78 RPM Record Shop, but don’t misunderstand, as records go, Justin stocks nearly everything—78s, 45s, and 33 RPM records, as well as hardware and accessories.

Justin has a real jukebox loaded with records in his shop, set for Free Play, so you can just pick any song, press the corresponding buttons, and listen as the machinery clanks and whirrs inside until you hear the soothing sound of the needle hitting the groove and your song choice begins in the warm, soothing tone of days gone by. We chose some Joe Cocker during our visit.

If you know a collector with a birthday coming up, or have one on your holiday shopping list, we’d especially recommend you stop in and visit with Justin, because he knows the history of just about everything in his shop and can recommend something that’ll be a sure hit with the recipient.

If it’s not too busy, ask Justin to show you his antique hand-cranked phonograph while you’re in the shop. It’s something to see.

The Texoma music scene has always had its guitar heroes — the players who could make a barroom crowd lose its mind on a Saturday night with a searing solo or a perfectly dialed-in cover. But every so often, those same heroes step off the familiar stage and bring us something entirely their own.

Right now, two of Texoma’s most respected six-string slingers — Rahn X and Barry Faulkner — have done just that. Both are fixtures in top Wichita Falls cover bands, Rahn with Strange Lucy and Barry with Local Zero and Coda Armour. After years of driving crowds wild with new and classic rock, they’ve each released original solo albums that put their guitar work — and their personal voices — front and center.

Rahn X — “Relationship Anthems”

Onstage, Rahn X (real name Ron Weaver) plays with precision and danger, his guitar slung low, fingers attacking the fretboard with blinding efficiency. On Relationship Anthems, his debut solo album, that energy turns confessional.

The record’s sound lands somewhere between Henry Rollins’ grit, Suicidal Tendencies’ urgency, Lou Reed’s cool detachment (though Rahn swears he’s never really listened to him), and the instrumental guitar records of the ’80s. There’s even a flash of Kirk Hammett’s metal edge.

“I had two other friends make the Lou Reed reference,” Rahn says. “I never really listened to him, either solo or with Velvet Underground.”

From the first distorted chord of “Manipulates,” it’s clear this isn’t a safe record. “That one was partially inspired by Slipknot,” he says. “I drew from Steve Vai for “Bright Eyes” and “BFNS.” And “Blind Love” had me thinking of Prince.”

It’s heavy yet personal, a lyrical deep-dive into relationship wreckage over an industrial-tinged backdrop. True to his DIY approach, Rahn produced the album entirely himself, performing all the instruments and handling the programming.

Barry Faulkner — “Time Is a Movie”

If Rahn’s record feels like a confession written in all caps, Barry Faulkner’s Time Is a Movie plays like a road trip soundtrack. Known for his fluid, melodic style, Barry delivers an album that drifts between genres without losing its center.

It’s diverse. “Top Down” is straight-ahead instrumental rock with a nod to Satriani and Vai. “Sunshine and Skeeterbites” is a day in the sun, tossing a frisbee, enjoying a cold one.

Across the record, there are flashes of hard rock, southern rock, metal, boogie-woogie, and blues. Faulkner played every instrument himself, using loops and occasional programming for the drum tracks. Most of the guitar work came from his Dean V models — except for one special moment.

“The strumming chords in ‘Spatial Delivery’ were recorded on a 12-string Fender Strat my uncle Dean (Faulkner, of A.A. Bottom) left me when he passed,” Barry says. “The song became my personal tribute to him, and the album is dedicated to his memory.”

Like Rahn X, Barry recorded entirely at home, producing, mixing, and designing the album art himself. “I’m used to being a collaborator,” he says. “But as the recording developed, I wanted it to be very personal, so I did everything I could myself.”

Two Roads, Same Fire

The timing of these albums feels poetic. For years, Rahn and Barry have lived in parallel worlds — two local guitar powerhouses, each the lead player in a premier cover band, each able to make a crowd forget they’re not hearing the original artist. Their solo work strips away the safety net, revealing their distinct creative identities.

The contrast is striking. Rahn’s music is confrontational and industrial, a storm of riffs and raw emotion. Barry’s flows with melodic ease, warm and open-ended. One draws from metal’s jagged edges, the other from sunlit grooves. Yet both are intensely personal, entirely self-made, and rooted in the same Texoma dirt.

They’re not competing — just proving that two artists from the same scene can follow wildly different but complimentary paths and both end up somewhere worth hearing.

The Texoma Factor

Wichita Falls and the surrounding Texoma area might be off the industry map, but that distance can be a gift. Here, musicians can write without chasing trends, build their own audiences, and take risks without a label breathing down their neck.

For Rahn, that freedom means tackling messy, uncomfortable truths about relationships. For Barry, it’s the freedom to wander stylistically, unconcerned with how algorithms might classify him.

What’s Next

Neither guitarist is leaving the stage. Rahn will keep tearing through solos with Strange Lucy, Barry with Local Zero and Coda Armour. But now, both have albums that speak in their own voice.

If you’re local, you know the fire these two bring live. Relationship Anthems and Time Is a Movie are streaming now, waiting to be discovered by anyone who loves guitar music made without a net.

Because sometimes the most exciting music doesn’t come from big cities or big labels. Sometimes it comes from two guys in Texoma, each chasing the sound in his head.

You can’t categorize Polly Pocket and that’s the way we like it. The Wichita Falls EDM Punk Princess personifies elements of EDM, indie Pop, Rock/Emo and so many other genres, categorization becomes impossible.

If there’s one thing we love, however, it’s artists putting it all out there, unafraid to take chances and lean into the avant garde, and Polly Pocket does that with enthusiastic abandon.

We wrote about A.A. Bottom recently as they rose from the ashes of the untimely passing of their beloved frontman, Dean Faulkner, and it was fantastic to see them back in action. What made their return even better, though, was seeing them again, just weeks later, in perfect weather at Bud Daniel Park. It was a big show that drew more than 300 adoring A.A. Bottom fans.

Iowa Park, Texas’ indie rockers Tiny Joy have a new EP out that leans into a rock sound, evident on the single “Just Like You.” We thought we heard a little bit of Nina Gordon/Veruca Salt in this release. Also on this list, “Smoke Break” and “Lose Lose.”

Doom Metal Sabbath devotees Mind Funeral have a new EP out, featuring the heavy and excellent “Closer to God.” Also featured on this playlist, “Hivemind.”

One-time law enforcement officer Frank Ray made a swing through Wichita Falls recently as the opening act for Brantley Gilbert. Take a listen to “Country’d Look Good on You.”

Downtown Royalty Band is making a case for Wichita Falls’ busiest band of 2025 with live dates that keep coming, and singles, too, including “Mark’s Song.” Also included here, the vicious breakup track “Done with You.”

Atmospheric rock quartet Loveship is out with a new album loaded with moody-but-relaxing rock tracks including the very cool “I Was Distracted.” Follow them for a dose of something different.

Married country duo (and new parents) The Hattons released “Criminal,” today, and it sounds like a release from a major label band. This one should go on your favorite country playlist now.

Newcomer Decker Rumfelt is only 15-years-old. We got a chance to see him last week and were blown away with the maturity of his music and songwriting. Check out “Silly Fool,” and “Still a Lot to Learn.”

Tulsa’s hard rock Dime Store Riot played at a show we saw in Oklahoma City in August and dazzled our eyes and ears. Check out the single they just dropped, “Cancel Me.”

How about some Wichita Falls metal from Singular Alloy with their new single “Heart of Stone?” Take a listen.

Graham, Texas native Gabe Choate sounds like a legacy country act well into a career as a famous country crooner, and with one listen to “Ghosts,” you’ll understand why. Incredible lyrics and an amazing country voice.

Wichita Falls EDM Punk Princess Polly Pocket (also of It Hurts to Be Dead) is out with a new album featuring the single “Transplant.” You want different? Polly Pocket’s got you.

Wichita Falls hardcore band Giant Pilot’s “Buried Face Down” brings to mind mental imagery of the pit at the beginning of a metal show. You enter at your own risk.

Hot off a strong showing in the KATTfest Battle of the bands in OKC, Lawton standouts Aquafire have a new single out, “Showtime,” and we love their 70s/80s inspired hard rock/sleaze rock sound.

It’s been awhile since we checked in with Oklahoma’s incredible Cade Roth & the Black Sheep and their single “Between the Lines” reminds us to check in more often. Every powerful, heartfelt single we hear from them is amazing.
